Pierson

Okay, so an Asian, two Indians, and a Jew, none of whom are taller than 5'10", show up for Pierson's B-hoops game against Branford. That's right, four players for the Pierson squad (2-6) against a full Branford squad (7-1). As one might expect, Branford started out well, taking an early 8-2 lead against the outnumbered Piersonites. Things were looking bleak indeed for our ethnically diverse, yet physically homogenous group.

But just when it looked as if the Bran-fordians were about to begin blowing out the Pierson Four, a strange, strange thing happened. A cool, crisp breeze began blowing, which filled the gym with electricity. All of a sudden, Pierson began to employ an aggressive box (ha ha ha—box) defense that stifled Branford's offense. Soon after, David "Sho-hei" Lee '02 began a scoring spree that brought Pierson back into contention. At halftime, Pierson was down only two points.

While their deficit was only two, the Pierson Four were exhausted from their continuous play and still outnumbered as the second half began. Yet these four young men realized that they were playing for something greater than themselves: they were playing for Pierson.

In the second half, the Pierson Four played with the strength of 10 men. What they lacked in stature and numbers, they made up for in heart, and, as previously mentioned, ethnic diversity. Manish Vora "good time call" '02 pulled down rebounds left and right, finishing the game with 38. Jason, "I get more action than that dude from the Shaggy song who got caught banging on the bathroom floor" Pessel '03 played tenacious defense, ending the game with 11 steals. Even Josh "My weiner does me about as much good as my appendix" Kaul '03 got in on the action, scoring 14 points on 4-52 shooting. In the end, the Branfordians never stood a chance as the Pierson Four sailed to a comfortable six-point victory.

What, you may ask, is the point of this story? Well, first, show up for IMs. It's not easy to win with four people. Secondly, and more importantly, in the words of Hani Abisaid: "Branford sucks, Pierson rules!!!!"
