Weekend Excursion

Feeling narcissistic? Want to be immortalized in a manner beyond the capabilities of the disposable camera? Or are you simply a fan of fine portraiture? Either way, the current exhibit at New Haven's Brush and Palette Club should appeal to you. Titled "The Portrait," it is a competitive portrait show with entries in every medium except photography. Don't expect to find big names in the show, but do look forward to impressive works; the prizes, after all, top $3,000. The portraits will be judged by Everett Raymond Kinstler, the eminent portraitist of five United States presidents, 50 cabinet officers, and celebrities such as John Wayne, Alan Shepard, Tom Wolfe, and many others.
MARISSA BASS/YH

Visitors are invited to not only enjoy the exhibition but also research the artists in a file of resumés, possibly commissioning a portrait for them-selves (Wouldn't your suitemates cherish an award-winning portrait of you hanging over the mantle?). For those who can't afford or don't wish to be painted themselves, the exhibit offers all the cherished and seldom found opportunity to stare endlessly at other people without transgressing social boundaries.

Beyond the more selfish pleasures afforded by the exhibit, Yale students can show their support for art ventures not associated with the University by dropping into this local gallery. Prizes will be awarded during a reception on Sun., Mar. 4 which many of the exhibiting artists will be attending. —Diana M. Aleman

The Brush and Palette Club is located in the John Slade Ely House at 51 Trumbull St. in New Haven. The Gallery is open Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Free. For more information, call Liz Wolf at 393-1366.
