UMass win a good sign

BY SAM WEBB

In an early spring season test, women's tennis trounced a strong UMass team 7-0. Yale handily proved its strength, winning two out of three doubles matches and sweeping all six singles matches. This success against UMass bodes well for Yale's Ivy prospects, as the Minutemen beat both Columbia and Dartmouth earlier this year.

The number-one doubles team of Andrea Goldberg, TD '02, and Biffy Kaufman, SY '03, won their tiebreaker set 7-5. "This victory was really a springboard for the singles sweep that followed," Coach Meghan MacMahon said. Susie Hiniker, MC '03, and Margaret Purcell, CC '04, defeated UMass at number-two doubles as well.

After the doubles matches, Goldberg met up with UMass phenom Francesca Mancini '04 in number-one singles. Losing the first set 6-3, Goldberg regrouped and took the final two sets in convincing fashion.

"Confidence is key for us this season. It's not easy considering Princeton and Harvard both have recent Ivy titles under their belts, but with the right frame of mind, we can take them," Captain Lauren Muehl, CC '01, said.

The Bulldogs will have their first opportunity to test their talent and build their confidence this weekend at the Princeton Invitational. The weekend will provide Yale, currently ranked 12th in the NCAA Division I Eastern Region, with a benchmark against which they can judge their potential success in the Ivy League. —Sam Webb
