Letters to the editor

Dear Editor:

While I appreciate Dean of Student Affairs Betty Trachtenberg's remarks regarding the accessibility of resources for victims of sexual assault, I can attest that my experience with Yale's resources was not perfect. All three of my voice mail messages to the Yale College Dean's Office in the fall of 1997 were left unreturned—only football Coach Jack Siedlecki was kind enough to forward my voice mail to Athletics Director Tom Beckett, who contacted me immediately. Additionally, it took over five weeks for me to be placed with a mental health counselor, not exactly a timeframe I would define as swift.

There is no clear path for victims of sexual assault to take, and while I agree that one reason might be muddled resources, another might be that women at Yale arrive thinking they won't be victims of sexual assault and as a result, turn off the "white noise" of sexual assault messaging. When they do find themselves as a victim of sexual assault, they find that they have no idea where to turn. Perhaps this problem should be addressed as well. —Anittah Patrick, JE '99

Corrections

In his column last week, Ben Reiter referred to the Yale Alumni Magazine as a publication of the University Administration [YH 3/23/01, "Rage against Yale's propaganda machine"]. This magazine is actually an independent publication edited and financed by individuals not belonging to the Administration, and no editorial comment within its pages is the official position of the University.

The graphic on the front page of last week's issue was not credited. The artist was Sarah England.

Last issue's IM Photo of the Week was improperly credited to Rebecca Rosenthal. The photographer was Katie Aldrich.

The Yale Herald regrets these errors and sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience they may have caused.
