Streaky sluggers

After starting the season with six straight victories, the Bulldogs stumbled badly, dropping 10 of their next 11. The season has been a story of two very different teams. In their victories, the Bulldogs average 5.25 runs per contest and have registered 25 extra base hits. Meanwhile, the pitching staff has been exceptional, holding opponents to a 2.00 ERA. However, in the Elis' 13 losses their bats have gone to sleep, managing only 1.5 runs per game and slugging eight extra base hits, while the pitchers have watched their ERA increase to 5.77. More than half of Yale's games this year have been decided by at least three runs.

Bombs away

Shayna Filson, CC '04, has already slammed four homers this season, tying the school mark set by Khelia Johnson, TC '00, in 1999. Her four bombs came in four consecutive games last week. Filson leads the team in RBI with 13. She is also one of Yale's four starting pitchers, with a solid 3-4 record.

Cruisin'

With a last-second win over Harvard (see p.25), the Bulldogs are off to their best start since the 1997 team started 8-0. That squad reached the finals of the ECAC tournament. The current edition owes much of its success to midfielder Miles Whitman, BK '04, and forward Clarissa Clarke, JE '03, who have combined to score 31 times, accounting for over 40 percent of the team's goals.

Men's Track

Running at the top

Yale currently holds top positions in many events in the weekly Heps outdoor update. Jason Rife, SM '01, has clocked the best 200- and 400-meter times, while Don Carson, CC '02, holds second place in 400-meter. Thomas Hocker, PC '02, is first place in the 400-meter hurdles and Yale's 4x400-meter relay team is also in first place.
