Davenport

What up, IM'ers? Spring time and those long-ass papers have arrived, which means one thing: this illustrious year is coming to an end. And let me tell ya, it's been as "illustrious" as ever, if you know what I mean.

Last year, D-port finished 10th. In the last 30 years, D-port has finished between ninth and 12th. Our last title was in the mid-'60s, when Calvin Hill and co. were tearin' it up all over the fields. But then came the year 2000.

Realizing that the new blood was fresher than ever, vets Colin "The chicks luv the scruffiness" Reingold '02 and Ankur "Mack daddy" Chugh '02 decided to take on a lackey to help turn things around. This boy was no other seabury than the seabury himself: David "Seabury Walker" Auerbach '03. Being a belligerent drunk with a goofy haircut, goofy smile, goofy laugh, goofy clothes, and a cute girlfriend, this cat was exactly what the doctor ordered. The twosome and their sidekick were now able to channel the freshmen's energy and talent, along with the fantastic spirit of the sophomores and occasional help from the juniors and seniors, into Davenport's finest fall season ever. We finished the season in second place with unparalleled enthusiasm and participation in all sports. It left everyone inside and out of the college wondering, "What the hell is going on?" Even alumni were calling up trying to figure out if D-port and TD had switched names or something.

Most thought this success would be short-lived, so the parties and accolades were thrown around like never before. But the new blood had not run dry. The long, cold winter was no trouble, as the men and women of D-port continued to dominate, mounting strong records in every sport. In fact, a champion emerged as the women's volleyball team spiked its way to the top, and another may be crowned this Thursday when A-hoops plays for the title.

Alas, spring has arrived. And despite it all, D-port has regained its control of second place after temporarily losing it in the winter. All teams look to be contenders for the t-shirts, with field hockey, volleyball, and frisbee looking especially strong.

In a couple of weeks, the 2000-'01 intramural season will be over. And when that day comes, Captains Reingold and Chugh will be stepping down from their posts after two years as those "IM guys." However, they pass the baton with a certain fondness and nostalgia, happy to make way for the new Davenport spirit that they so enjoyed watching grow, a spirit that places fun above all else, a spirit that embodies everything intramurals should be at Yale.

Thanks for it all, the memories, sports, t-shirts, friends and fun. But above all, we'll miss you, the chicks.  Intramurals did for us what lacrosse does for the lacrosse team.  Enjoy, Dave.

(Compiled by the old guard who look forward to throwing IM parties in the Cottage next year.)
