Weekend Excursion

If you feel the urge to escape New Haven this Friday night, a good place to unwind is The Cooler. The New York club will feature Congo Norvell leading a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg. The club, the dim downtown location of a former meat locker, is an ideal venue for the slightly dark, breathy music that it will host.

Congo Norvell is a duo of vocalist Sally Norvell and guitarist Kid Congo Powers, formerly of the Cramps, the Bad Seeds, and the Gun Club. The two artists draw on cabaret jazz and torch songs for their minimalist post-punk sound. Gainsbourg is perhaps most famed for his sexy duet with actress Jane Birkin, "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus," the kind of song whose meaning you can catch even if you don't understand a word of French. If you haven't heard him, it's worth it to pirate a few of his MP3s. Then catch the show and see if Congo Norvell can do justice to Gainsbourg. —Diana M. Aleman

The Cooler is open to those 18 and older. It is located at 416 West 15th St. between 9th Avenue and Washington Street. The club accepts American Express, MasterCard, and Visa and costs up to $15. For more information, call (212) 229-0785.
