Yale recovers from loss to face top-ranked Duke

For defenseman Megan Strenski, MC '02, lacrosse's upset over Duke two years ago was a pivotal moment in her career. "Beating Duke my freshman year was my first huge collegiate upset and probably my most memorable," Strenski said. "I think that win helped the Yale team gain respect in the lacrosse community." Unfortunately, memories of facing Duke last year remain fixed in Yale's mind. Only six current players participated in the upset win of two years ago. Fresh in the memory of most players is the 17-4 loss last year. "What we remember more is that harsh loss they handed us last season," Captain Liz Gardner, DC '01, said.

The seventh-ranked Bulldogs (9-1, 4-1 Ivy) will have to tame a high-powered Duke team (10-2) that is hoping to extend its current winning streak to seven games. But if this past weekend's loss to Princeton taught the Elis anything, it was that they can compete with anyone—Yale lost to Princeton 13-8, but Duke also fell to Princeton earlier this season 10-7.

Facing fourth-ranked Duke gives the Bulldogs another chance to prove their abilities against a top team. But Gardner emphasizes the need to keep the game in perspective, considering it is just one of five remaining. "We have a lot to prove to Duke, but we are looking at the game in the same way we have every other opponent," Gardner said. "They are standing in the way of our goal to reach the NCAA tournament."

The Bulldogs head into the weekend with added confidence after a convincing 18-2 win over Columbia on Wed., Apr. 11. Ten different players scored, and Sarah Queener, SY '03, led Yale with four goals and three assists.
