Ezra Stiles

The mighty moose has been a bit mouse-like of late, as IM participation has dropped since that glorious 8-1 opening week. A double forfeit to the already defunct Morse volleyball team wasn't very impressive, nor was the double forfeit to their soccer team, particularly after a loss to Pierson. Calhoun's mighty volleyball army was reduced to five before Wed., Apr. 18's game, but that made little difference since Stiles failed to produce more than a single player. A heart-breaking last-inning loss to Morse's softball team sealed a forgettable week for the yellow and gold.

Speaking of gold, however, Stiles still boasts two undefeated teams. The moose reaffirmed its dominance in ultimate by weathering a storm of little men in red shorts and then physical play, misplaced anger, and cheap foul calls as it edged out an 8-7 victory over Calhoun. The stellar play of senior standout Mike Gerber '01 and experienced Ari Cohen '03 were instrumental in the systematic dismantling of the helpless 'Houn squad.

Likewise valuable was the contribution of Andy Cowdery '03, whose brilliance in ultimate is matched only by his talented leadership of Stiles's 5-0 billiards team, which most recently handed Calhoun its first loss of the season. The Ezra Stiles/Morse baseball team, meanwhile, has reminded many of the 1991 Atlanta Braves "Worst to first" squad headed by the sure arm of lefty Charlie Liebrandt and the mighty bat and stomach of Terry Pendleton. Look out for this gritty club sliding into home like Sid Bream against our next victims.

The weeks to come will be filled with playoff action, final exams, and, lastly, farewells. It is thus with heavy hearts and best wishes that we bid good bye to all the Stiles seniors, especially the graduating secretaries who have contributed so much to intramural sports over the years. Without your participation and encouragement, we would probably be underachieving with the likes of TD.
