Editor's note

In the wake of Tuesday's tragic events, IM secretaries met earlier this week to discuss whether competition would start as planned on Wed., Sept. 12. There were differing opinions on the subject; some secretaries thought intramurals should be put off for a few days, while others thought they should begin as scheduled simply to give students an enjoyable diversion.

Ultimately, the secretaries decided to postpone Wednesday's games and resume on Thurs., Sept. 13. Intramurals secretary Mike Mackenzie, SM '03, said that even though opinion was split among the secretaries themselves, the Yale community as a whole seemed to support their final decision. But, he explained, "We [thought] Thursday's games should occur, for we felt that by then, many students [would] be ready and looking for ways to try and resume normal life—I, for one, welcomed the peace for a few hours."

While intramurals started, golf—the sport that usually kicks off the fall intramural season—has been postponed indefinitely due to difficulties with scheduling a course. There is no word on when golf will be played at this time.

Although IM coordinators had minor disagreements on when, exactly, to resume IMs, most of them expressed the hope that beginning on Thursday would be therapeutic for Yalies who chose to participate. Alex Kass, CC '03, said, "I found intramurals as something to get my mind off of other things, even for a couple of hours. Intramurals should serve as something positive."
