Editor's Note

On Tuesday, many of us awoke to roommates banging on doors, parents calling to make sure their children were safe, televisions buzzing with the most horrific images we had seen in our lifetimes. Still, few realized the gravity of what had just taken place, and only as the day went on, as an eerie silence on campus gave way to an outpouring of emotion, could we even begin to come to terms with the enormity of it all. Dealing with a tragedy on this scale will indeed take days, weeks, even years. But as President Levin asserted during Tuesday night's Cross Campus vigil, Yale is a "community of concern," one in which all of us -- students, faculty, and employees -- must help each other come to some sort of understanding.

It is with that in mind that we have published this special issue of the Herald.

In place of our usual front-page story, we have expanded our News section to give you the fullest coverage of the week's events -- everything from the Administration's immediate response to the tragedy, to photos of campus throughout the week, to the Yale faculty's discussion of what lies ahead for our country. The Opinion, Arts and Entertainment, and Sports sections have also changed; certain regular features have taken on a more serious tone this week, and some have been removed.

As an additional service to our readers, the Herald has posted on its website a list of alumni who have been reported safe following Tuesday's events. You can view this list and post names of additional people whom you know are secure at www.yaleherald.com/safe.

In the meantime, may our "community of concern" remain firmly together -- in a time like this, we can hope for nothing more than solidarity. -- Andrew Heller, Editor-in-Chief
