Turnaround victories

After nearly two weeks off, the Yale women's volleyball team returned to the court to host the annual Yale Classic on Fri. and Sat., Sept. 21 and 22.

Though the Bulldogs were swept by Ivy foe Brown on the first day of the event, they rebounded well on Sat., Sept. 22, defeating Sacred Heart and Iona without surrendering a single game.

Coach Peg Scofield was pleased with the wins but worried about an early loss to a conference opponent. "The weekend showed we are capable of beating slower-paced teams but not yet up to speed with the top teams in the Ivy race," she said.

"The tournament was a good indicator to us, as a team, on the points we need to improve on," Captain Carissa Abbott, SM '02, added. "We feel that we could have beaten Brown and should have been more competitive with them. We also should have had more convincing wins over Sacred Heart and Iona."

Despite the disappointing loss to open the Ivy schedule, Yale underclassmen shined. Scofield commended Ivy League Rookie of the Week, outside hitter Jana Freeman, SY '05, as well as right side Taryn Gallup, SM '04, and setter Alison Lungstrum, SY '04.

Abbott reserved special collective praise for the youngest members of this year's team. "I can't say enough about how mature the freshmen have been. They play like veterans," she said.
