Silliman

In this Monody the Author bewails a clutch Foot-ballist, unfortunately fell'd in his Passage from yonder Midfield to the End Zone, 2001. And by occasion foretells the ruin of the other corrupted Colleges now in their height. Yet once more, O ye Pigskins, and once more

Ye painted fields, I fain would sing to thee;

Of one who, selfless, stalked thy flow'ring grass,

Who injured perished, felled by faulty cleats:

Of Mike "The Spike" MacKenzie, Silliman

'03: O Mike! Thou stalwart gen'ral brave,

Whose battle cries the Sillitroops did heed!

In vict'ries past the end zone thou thrice found,

Thou, ankle buckled, tumbled to the ground.

But in thy wake the salamander stirred,

Ablaze but not consumed, he sallied forth

And in thy name did vict'ry consecrate.

That pair of coed captains standing tall:

One Alex Bribriesco, sophomore,

"Cojones Grandes" he to all is known;

He now, with fair Dave Gest, that skilled '03,

Two forfeits o'er dead teams doth celebrate

And for the season's rubber match prepare.

In homage, Silli-ping-pong players vow

That to MacKenzie they will dedicate

Each point, each smash, each brilliant spinning serve:

Doth Maggie Ziegler every match attend,

Fierce junior, few can hit as hard as she,

And fewer still in spirit her excel.

My heavy tongue now to my palate cleaves,

Think not, O fields, that I ye have forgot,

For on thy trampled blades a vicious lass

And now another, soccer goals doth score,

In order that the trophy home they bring.

MacKenzie, know that Sill'man weepeth not

But rallies round thy fallen corpse, the Tyng

To claim, that Sillimanders aeons hence

Might thy, MacKenzie's, virtues, ever sing!

(Written by the uncouth Silliswain).
