Weekend Excursion

After the skin-baring shenanigans of Halloween, you might get the feeling you've been seeing a little bit too much of Yale in recent weeks. It's in times like these that a New York museum getaway becomes therapeutic. Because while nudity of the Yale variety is always amusing but also a bit repulsive, nudity of the Pablo Picasso variety is art.

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) houses classics like Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Henri Rousseau's The Dream. In honor of new additions to the permanent collection of the Department of Drawings, MoMA is now holding an exhibition called "New to the Modern: Recent Acquisitions from the Department of Drawing" until Tues., Jan. 8, 2002. The exhibit features works by Willem de Koonig, Ellsworth Kelly, and Jacob Lawrence.

Another exhibition, called "Project 73: Olafur Eliasson—Seeing Yourself Sensing," explores sensory perception and architecture. The installation, comprised of 50 sheets of striped transparent and mirrored glass extending over the first and second floors of the Garden Hall, also addresses the shifting nature of the museum itself, which is undergoing renovation and expansion.

If you're taking the train to the city, make sure you stop by the Dining Concourse at Grand Central Station, where, for $10 this weekend, will be an all-you-can-eat buffet between noon and 8 p.m. on Saturday and between noon and 6 p.m. on Sunday. One dollar of every donation goes toward the New York Police and Fire Widows' and Children's Fund. —Katherine Hill

MoMA is located at 11 West 53rd St., New York, and is open from 10:30 a.m. to 5:45 p.m. on weekends. Admission is $12 for adults and $8.50 for students with ID. For more information, call (212) 708-9400.
