Behind the numbers

Men's Soccer

The Bulldogs (6-7-2, 1-4-1) ended their six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion on Wed., Nov. 7 with a 5-0 win over St. Peter's. Though the team entered its difficult stretch run at an impressive 5-1-2, it failed to capitalize on late-game scoring opportunities in dropping four of its six games by one goal. Despite an advantage in shots in most of its games, Yale failed to convert attempts into goals.

Shots By Period
1st 2nd
Yale 85 104
Opponents 79 80

Goals by Period

In 2000, the team posted its fifth consecutive winning season and was in the hunt for the Ivy title until the season's final week. With the return of three first-team All-Ivy players, Yale had lofty expectations for 2001, but injuries and other difficult circumstances impeded both the team and its players from achieving many of their aims.

Points by Year
2000 2001
Justin Burton 12 5
Stuart Yingst 8 10
Brian Larkin 7 4
Steve Gibbons 6 3
Brian Lavin 6 3
John Walker 6 1
Jay Alberts 17 0

With the loss of star goalkeeper Danny Moss, MC '01, to graduation, the Bulldogs' biggest challenge entering the 2001 season was finding a consistent replacement in the net. While Moss tried out for the Kansas City Monarchs of the MLS, Yale suffered injuries to several goalies and called on David Pozen, TC '02, to mind the net after a two-year hiatus. A look at Yale goaltending in 2000, as compared to this season:

2000 Yale Goaltending
Games GAA

Danny Moss 11 0.98
Geoff Hollington 7 1.12
Russ Stroud 2 2.94
TOTAL 17 1.13

2001 Yale Goaltending
Games GAA
Russ Stroud 12 1.02
Dan Grimm 3 1.74
David Pozen 2 2.83
Geoff Hollington 1 5.63
TOTAL 15 1.50

The Bulldogs finish their season Saturday against Princeton. Though a promising start to the season deteriorated amid injuries and offensive struggles, the 5-0 win should provide motivation for the season finale. The team scored more goals in the victory over St. Peter's than it did throughout its six-game losing streak.
