Young team heads into break on a roll

At first glance, it may seem odd that, after only one match, the women's squash team won't be competing again for an entire month. Unlike many schools, though, Yale traditionally plays only one game before winter break. "It's a little tough because we have such a big vacation," Coach Mark Talbott explained. "But I believe the players will stay focused and work hard during practice and at home."

Talbott has good reason to have faith in his team's work ethic. Yale has already shown that it has a deeply talented squad, despite the presence of only three upperclassmen. On Sat., Dec. 1, the Bulldogs traveled to Penn and decimated the Quakers 8-1 in the season opener. Yale's victory marks the first time in seven years that the Elis have defeated the Quakers. Led by No. 1 player Frances Ho, MC '05, who won her match 3-0, the Bulldogs played consistently well in all positions, losing only at the No. 2 spot.

Although athletes usually require time to adjust to collegiate play, the freshmen have used their experience competing in national tournaments to ease the transition. Captain Miriam Fishman, MC '02, and Kate Sands, CC '02, have also helped their new teammates adjust to the team competitions and more rigorous training regimens characteristic of the collegiate level.

This year's success will rely upon the team's ability to continue refining its talent if the Bulldogs hope to surpass their No. 7 ranking of last year. "This year's squad is different because the girls are bringing in national experience," Talbott said. "We aren't just getting converted tennis players or prep-school stars."
